Luigi Naldini, world-renowned geneticist, is the great Italian scientist who has “domesticated” the virus that causes AIDS ( the HIV) in order to transform it in a powerful vehicle for tackling the disease, after having rendered it harmless. He is President of the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, EMBO member since 2008, winner of an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant, received the Sapio Award for Italian research in 2012 and the Outstanding Investigator Award from’ American Society of Gene and Cell therapy in 2014. Professor of Histology and Cell and gene Therapy at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan, as well as Director of the San Raffaele-Telethon.
