Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado, PhD, is Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the Stowers Institute for Medical. His lab explores the process and genetic control of tissue regeneration and maintenance and has identified dozens of genes and genetic programs that drive regeneration.
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Latin American Academy of Sciences and is a Fellow of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole. He has been awarded the National Institutes of Health MERIT award, the EE Just Medal for Scientific Achievement, the Obaid Siddiqi Award in the Life Sciences and, most recently, the Vilcek Prize in Biomedical Science. He has served on numerous scientific committees and boards, including the National Advisory Council of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, National Institutes of Health, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of American Century Investments. Alejandro holds degrees in molecular biology and chemistry from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and a doctorate in pharmacology and cellular biophysics from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine at Cincinnati.
